How to Build Great Process, Rule, and Event Models

Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN) is an increasingly successful Object Management Group (OMG) standard and whether you are in government, manufacturing, or business, you need to understand how to accurately depict your company’s processes in BPMN. The BPMN Specification, however, can be abstract, lengthy, and complicated. As a result, learning to use BPMN can be daunting and force professionals to steer clear of it without an efficient and easy way of getting acquainted with the material.

BPMInstitute.org has been at the forefront of education and thought leadership in this area and as a benefit to our members; we are providing a free sample of one of the most recent books on BPMN: The Microguide to Process Modeling in BPMN 2.0.

Often, competitive environments change faster than a firm’s responding processes and decision making abilities.  Most organizations fail at executing strategies designed to improve their position in the market.

Organizations improving performance and aligning or reengineering processes endeavor to define their core business processes. They often use ‘happy days’ use case scenarios, or they create workflow diagrams in Visio. A ‘happy-day path’ only considers flows that occur when no exceptions are encountered. So, someday the team needs to visit ‘unhappy’ branches. Converting the use case or work-flow into the formal needs of a business process model can be challenging. So I offer these simple guidelines.

All organizations strive to meet their commitments to customers, employees and partners. By definition, ‘high performance’ firms fulfill commitments with correct decisions and precisely completed process cycles. Yet almost no company is perfect. Improved performance means improving maturity in many areas. Enterprise Maturity is a goal I find in the work of several important authors.

Business Agility is the ability to run profitably in changing economic conditions by producing high-quality, customer-focused goods and services. Theorists in business management and technology agree the key to achieving agility is in a focus on business processes.

For instance, In the February, 2007 issue of Harvard Business Review, “How Managers’ Everyday Decisions Create or Destroy Your Companies Strategy”, Bower and Gilbert describe intransigence of sales personnel at dealerships for a leading automotive manufacturer.

Readers of the Business Rules topic section have probably found Barbara von Halle’s writing on the Rules Maturity model RMM. The model depicts an enterprise’s staged understanding of business rules and their progressive benefits. The model starts with stage zero, no recognition of importance of formal processes of managing policies and corporate guidance through business rules. In short, the stages are:

In the early stages of a BPM project a business might create a written specification and planning level diagram of the project target process. Yet there is much work that must happen to translate these into a functioning business process. The challenge to the process implementer is to see the shape of the business processes based on an oral or written description of the process. An able implementer should perform a lexical analysis of the business requirement to develop a technically accurate assessment. A process solution can break when there is a weak implementation of requirements.

Business Process Management and Business Rules Approaches (BPM/BR) are agility technologies. Yet, for most early adopters they are the last step in inoculating agility into an organization. First business, government and non-profit organizations must identify and recognize a challenge arising from changes in demand, missions and charters. Next the challenge must be incorporated into a project portfolio then lastly carried out.

Is RETE Necessary for Business Rules – Why you should care

Many BRMS vendors, especially the leaders Fair Isaac and ILOG, consider their implementation of the RETE algorithm a critical part of their product offering. Yet you might not understand what RETE is and why it can be either useful or unnecessary, depending on the rules problem domain. So what is RETE?

The RETE algorithm was developed to improve evaluation performance with large knowledge or fact sets. For example, a diagnostic expert system might describe many signs and symptoms for the diagnosis of a condition. Because of the diagnosis, an action may be taken.
